Should Sanctuary Cities Continue to Receive Federal Funding for Law Enforcement?
Pro (Yes)

"Yes. If what you're saying is that Santa Fe gets federal funding of any sort, and that by not allowing the federal government holding over Santa Fe's head any sort of federal funds that come into Santa Fe, I would be opposed to having those federal funds withheld. I would not hold federal funding over the head of any city that declared themselves a sanctuary city."

"Countless innocent American lives have been stolen because our politicians have failed in their duty to secure our borders and enforce our laws like they have to be enforced. I have met with many of the great parents who lost their children to sanctuary cities and open borders. So many people, so many, many people. So sad...
President Obama and Hillary Clinton support sanctuary cities. They support catch and release on the border. they support visa overstays. They support the release of dangerous, dangerous, dangerous, criminals from detention...
We will end the sanctuary cities that have resulted in so many needless deaths. Cities that refuse to cooperate with federal authorities will not receive taxpayer dollars, and we will work with Congress to pass legislation to protect those jurisdictions that do assist federal authorities."

"[Brianna] KEILAR: Last week an undocumented immigrant who had been deported five times killed a 32-year-old woman, Kate Steinle, in San Francisco, a sanctuary city where local law enforcement does not enforce federal immigration laws.
When you last ran for president you supported sanctuary cities.
In light of this terrible incident, does that change anything about your view on this?
CLINTON: Well, what should be done is any city should listen to the Department of Homeland Security, which as I understand it, urged them to deport this man again after he got out of prison another time. Here's a case where we've deported, we've deported, we've deported. He ends back up in our country and I think the city made a mistake. The city made a mistake, not to deport someone that the federal government strongly felt should be deported.
So I have absolutely no support for a city that ignores the strong evidence that should be acted on.
However, there are - like if it were a first-time traffic citation, if it were something minor, a misdemeanor, that's entirely different. This man had already been deported five times. And he should have been deported at the request of the federal government."

"Senator Sanders wholeheartedly rejects the 'The Great Sanctuary City Slander' as the politics of fear, and supports enacting community trust policies. These policies will strengthen relationships between community members and local law enforcement, respect the constitutional rights of immigrants, and reflect the will of a locally elected electorate."

[Editor's Note: On Oct. 20, 2015, Senator Bernie Sanders voted against the Stop Sanctuary Policies and Protect Americans Act (S.2146). The bill would have prohibited "sanctuary jurisdictions" from receiving federal grants for law enforcement under the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, the Community Oriented Policing Services Program, and the Community Development Block Grant Program.]

"Crack down on sanctuary cities that undermine efforts to enforce immigration laws.
We should withhold federal law enforcement funds for cities that undermine federal immigration laws and make sure we detain and deport illegal immigrants who are serious criminals. We should also expand federal partnerships that train state and local police to help enforce immigration laws, particularly in jails and prisons. When I was Governor of Florida, the state was a trailblazer in working with the federal government to enforce immigration laws."

"[T]he scandalously poor enforcement of our immigration laws is made much, much worse by the lawless actions of the roughly 340 so-called sanctuary jurisdictions across the country. Although these jurisdictions are more than happy—eager, even—to take Federal taxpayer dollars, they go out of their way to obstruct and impede Federal immigration enforcement by adopting policies that prohibit their law enforcement officers from cooperating with Federal officers. Some of the jurisdictions even refuse to honor requests from the Federal Government to temporarily hold a criminal alien until Federal officers can take custody of the individual. Not only are these sanctuary policies an affront to the rule of law, but they are extremely dangerous...
These policies are inexcusable. They are a threat to the public safety of the American people, and they need to end. That is why I am proud to be one of the original cosponsors of the Stop Sanctuary Policies and Protect Americans Act, which strips certain Federal funds, especially community development block grants, from jurisdictions that maintain these lawless policies. If these jurisdictions insist on making it more difficult to remove criminal aliens from our communities, then these Federal dollars should go instead to jurisdictions that will actually cooperate with the Federal Government, that are willing to enforce the law rather than aid and abet the criminals."

"One of the things we talked about in the past, and we tried to get included with negotiations with Democrats in the past, is the idea of getting rid of the sanctuary city situation. Saying to these localities, if you are not going to participate in helping us to enforce these laws, they you are not going to be eligible for the federal funding that you are receiving.
It's an outrageous situation where you have these localities [sanctuary cities] that basically decide that because they have got a political agenda, or a view of immigration law, they can somehow ignore the enforcement of these laws...
In this case you have political elected officials, and an ultra-liberal government, who refuses to comply with the law because they don't agree with the law, and that is just completely unacceptable."

"Many Americans have reached out to me to share their concern about sanctuary cities and the seemingly insurmountable problems on the Southern border. One of my top priorities as president would be to seal the border with Mexico to stop the flow of drugs and violence into the United States. Furthermore, I would end federal policies that have permitted cities to harbor criminal illegal immigrants. The tragedies that have occurred due to such criminal illegal immigrants are completely avoidable and should never happen again."

“[Neal Cavuto:] This Sanctuary city debate that's very big right now, how do you feel about that? Should we have them? There's an effort in the house, as you know, to stop it.
[John Kasich:] I don't think that these officials should be thumbing their nose at the law. And, frankly, as we see, when people ignore the law, some bad things can happen, so I hope that they move forward with some of this legislation. I don't know the details of all of it. But, at the end of the day, we don't want people who have violated the law to walk away and have no consequence.
[Neal Cavuto:] So we don't want sanctuary cities is what you’re saying?
[John Kasich:] No, we don't. We don't."
