Should Checking Employee Immigration Status (as in the E-Verify Program) Be Mandatory for All Employers?
Pro (Yes)
Pro
"Enact an application and tracking procedure for guest workers, such as an e-verify system. Procedures must be quick, simple and efficient in providing documentation information, and must meet the needs of both employers and willing workers."

"Nationwide e-verify. This simple measure will protect jobs for unemployed Americans."

"Many illegal immigrants come to the United States for jobs and, despite the prohibition on hiring illegal immigrants, they are hired in large numbers. If we decrease the likelihood of being employed, crossing the border will be less rewarding...
We need a strong E-Verify system to ensure that American businesses are not hiring illegal immigrants. E-Verify is an Internet-based system that allows businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States. Employers should not be penalized if they use E-Verify in good faith and receive an incorrect eligibility confirmation. Identity theft protections are also necessary. Finally, with an improved E-Verify, the government must enforce penalties for violations."

"Most who enter the country illegally come here to work. Employers should not be exploiting cheap illegal labor and should be held accountable when they do. Every employer in the country should be using e-verify to check the work status of employees."

"[T]he legislation I introduced would put in place a strong biometric exit-entry system, so we can stop visa overstays. And, finally, we should put in place a robust E-Verify system, so you can't get a job without demonstrating you’re here illegally."

"There's no question that we should be deporting illegals who have committed major crimes. There's no question that we should have an employer verification system that actually works so we can make it mandatory."

"Both sides of the aisle would like to see reforms to the electronic employment verification program... Ultimately, we would prefer to pass a bill requiring mandatory participation in the program. Since there is very little time left in this session, we urge you to support a straight reauthorization of E-Verify. Extending the program will keep employers accountable while giving them the tools needed to abide by the law in their hiring practices."

"[Y]ou need an e-verify system and you need an entry-exit tracking system and all sorts of other things to prevent illegal immigration."

"Many see measures contained in this bill, such as a strong E-Verify and a 'photo tool,' as a means to control unlawful immigrants’ access to unlawful employment. I worry that they go too far.
I think there are better ideas that err on the side of individual privacy while still strengthening our borders. We should scrap a national identification database and pass immigration reform that secures the border, expands existing work-visa programs and prevents noncitizens from access to welfare. These simple ideas will eliminate the perceived need for an invasive worker-verification system and a government citizenship database."

"We have to reduce the incentive for people to want to come here. That's how you fix the problem. I guarantee you that if you remove all the goodies, people will find a way to get out of here just like they found a way to get in here. And one of the most important parts of that are the employers. As far as I'm concerned, the second offense, if you hire someone who's not here legally, should be a criminal offense – and they should be treated as such. Absolutely."
